To start us off we have asked the Principal, Rebecca Carrington, some questions so you can get to know more about her. Rebecca started running Arts1 nearly 12 years ago now, and we grow more and more each year – here is our interview with Rebecca;
Can you describe Arts1 in 5 words?
Its all about the people
What are your top three musicals?
That’s a hard question. I like different musicals for different reasons. I would say Chess, Lord of the Rings, Seussical. If I could add a fourth it would be The Hired Man.
What is the best piece of dance theatre you have ever seen?
When I was a child I was very lucky as my parents used to take me to see lots of touring dance companies. I remember seeing Christopher Bruce’s “Rooster” performed by London Contemporary Dance Company the first time it toured the UK. I was 12 years old at the time and I thought it was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. The girls in “Paint it Black” were so slick and sharp and the whole piece made a huge impression on me. I used to attend dance classes 6 days a week as a child and dancing was everything to me. I wanted to grow up to be just like one of those girls. My path has changed slightly since but whenever I hear the Rolling Stones, I can’t help but think of Rooster.
If you could stage one play, what would it be?
I would love to do something really fantasy based and design led so something like Tom’s Midnight Garden or The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe for the students would be amazing.
When you were training, what was your go to song, and why?
“Nothing” from A Chorus Line. I totally related to the dilemma of the song plus it was a song that I could sing just as well at 9am as I could at 3pm for auditions so it never stressed me out!
