This week we chat to Nicole, currently in Dreamgirls at the Savoy Theatre, covering the role of Effie White. Nicole has also just announced that she will be doing her first ever solo concert in January 2019.
Nicole chats to us about growing up in theatre, and what its like to take on such a huge role in the West End.
Did you do theatre growing up? If so what did you do?
Yes!! I went to my local drama school from the age of about 14-19 once/twice a week and I learnt so much about working with a lot of people and as an ensemble member and was lucky enough to have a few lead roles.
What inspired you and kept you motivated when you were younger?
What inspired me growing up was the variety of theatre. There are endless options and shows and sure it might take a while to find the right one for you but I think that’s what kept me going.
What advice would you give to someone who is currently training at a Arts1, who wants to perform as a career?
The advice I would give to anyone in training or looking for a career in theatre and maybe the best piece of advice I got when I was younger was to never lose who I am as a person. Always stand out for being yourself because yes there are people similar to you but no one is as different as you are. Embrace that.
What is one piece of advice someone once gave you and has served you well?
I was once told by Sierra Boggess you have nothing to prove only to share. And the moment I got that piece of advice I stopped looking for approval and being apologetic if I messed up. You live in the moment and you perform for yourself.
You understudy the huge role of Effie White, what goes through your head from getting the call to say you are on, to stepping onstage?
All of the emotions ha! I go through waves of excitement to being terrified which is completely normal. It’s a mammoth part and if I wasn’t feeling those emotions then I would be worried.
